SEMI-HOT BITUMINOUS MIXTURES ON THE A-23 HIGHWAY (ZARAGOZA)

Semi-hot bituminous mixtures on the A-23 highway (Zaragoza)

In a rehabilitation work on the pavement of the A-23 highway, between PPKK 250,700 to 277,600 (Zaragoza), nearly 30,000 t of semi-hot bituminous mixtures, types AC 22 bin S 35/50 and AC 16 surf, have been put into work. These were manufactured at an average temperature of 131 °C, that is, about 30 °C below the typical temperature of conventional hot production, thanks to the use of a bitumen foamer in the manufacturing plant.

According to the results of the production control and on-site control tests, the semi-hot mixes have satisfied the volumetric and mechanical requirements of equivalent conventional hot bituminous mixes. The article in the magazine RUTAS (Nº195) shows, in addition to the temperature reduction procedure used and the results of the tests, the economic, technical and environmental advantages of producing bituminous mixtures at low temperatures are reviewed. More specifically, they have tried to quantify those obtained in this case, concluding that life cycle analysis is the ideal tool to adequately assess the set of improvements found. Finally, some recommendations are made related to the reference density and water sensitivity of semi-hot bituminous mixtures.

WE STARTED WORK ON THE NEW BIKE LANE ON TV-3141 IN REUS

Parma Engineering is awarded the Construction Management of the new Infrastructure project of the Generalitat of Catalonia. Today, the construction of a new 1,800 m stretch of bike lane and the remodeling of the longitudinal drainage in TV-3141 have begun.

Work: “Local improvement works. Bike lane, longitudinal drainage and removable gutters on the TV-3141 road from KP 4+700 to 6+500 (Blancafort roundabout). Reus. Code: MT-16058” with a tender budget of €1,910,544.10, was awarded on 11/18/2022 to the construction company Auxiliar de Firmes y Carreteras (AFICSA) and Segusenyal SL and has an expected execution period of 5 months.

The objective of the project is to improve road safety on TV-3141 by converting the current deep ditch into a traversable ditch, which will also be compatible with the construction of a new bike lane.

DRON TECHNOLOGY FOR BRIDGE REPAIR PROJECTS

Inspection and filming with high-definition drones makes it possible to approach the drafting of projects at points that are difficult or impossible to access.

Infrastructure of the Generalitat of Catalonia commissioned Parma Engineering to carry out the project “Rehabilitation of the factory work, stabilization of the slopes and improvement of the surface drainage of the C-58 from PK 23+900 to 24+600. “Viladecavalls.” With a planned budget allocation of €975,000 and 6 months for its writing.

Access to be able to define the best technical solution proposal and its corresponding assessment for a viaduct of 190m in length and variable heights of up to more than 30m would be much more imprecise without being able to support ourselves with the high-precision images provided by the new drones. These drones allow us to reach all the impossible access points such as the neoprene of the piles, the interior part between the different beams…

C-58 bridge inspection

At Parma Engineering we are applying drone inspections to different projects and to the three Framework Contracts for Firms, Structures and Geological Assets of the Generalitat of Catalonia in the province of Girona, in Tarragona and in Terres del Ebre.

HOW TO MAKE ROADS MORE HUMAN

The challenge was to implement a cycle path on an interurban road and apply cold recycling technologies to reduce the carbon footprint in the rehabilitation of the road surface.

Parma Engineering has developed a project for the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda titled: “Structural rehabilitation of the road surface and implementation of the Cycle Route. Highway N-330. Mileage points 633,240 to 642,790. Section: Sabiñánigo – Jaca. Province of Huesca.”

This project has a budget of 3.3 million euros and an expected execution period of 8 months, covering 9.5 km of the N-330 highway between Sabiñánigo and Jaca. A notable aspect of this project is the introduction of a bicycle lane on a conventional interurban road, which will involve limiting vehicle speed to 50 km/h. Additionally, appropriate horizontal and vertical signage will be implemented to ensure that bicycle lanes have priority over general traffic at intersections and highway accesses.

General plan of the project

This will increase safety on this section of the popular Quebrantahuesos cycling route.

4 ADVANTAGES OF BIM IN LINEAR ROAD WORKS

Apply BIM modeling to the construction and rehabilitation of road works from the project phase to construction and commissioning

BIM (Building Information Modeling) is a powerful tool that enables users to compile and manage information about every aspect of a project. It has gained significant traction in recent years, particularly in architectural works. At Parma Ingeniería, we have been utilizing BIM for some time now, both during the project drafting phase and in the management of several of our road contracts.

The main advantages of BIM (Building Information Modeling) include:

  • Enhanced Collaboration: BIM promotes collaboration among all parties involved in a project, including owners, designers, construction management teams, and construction companies. This integrated approach fosters better communication and coordination.
  • 3D Visualization: Users can easily visualize the model in 3D throughout all phases of the project, from the initial design to the final constructed state. This visualization aids in understanding complex designs and facilitates stakeholder engagement.
  • Sustainability Promotion: BIM supports sustainability efforts by enabling the calculation of carbon footprints and conducting various environmental analyses at different project stages. This helps in making informed decisions that minimize environmental impact.
  • Accessibility of Information: All project information is readily available at any time and from anywhere, as we work in the cloud. This accessibility ensures that team members can stay updated and make timely decisions.

At Parma Ingeniería, we have successfully implemented the BIM methodology within our company, completing the drafting of 9 projects for the Generalitat of Catalonia and Infrastructures.cat. Additionally, we have participated in the execution of 9 contracts for the construction and rehabilitation of linear works, serving either as construction management or technical assistance. In all these cases, BIM modeling has provided significant improvements in project outcomes.
